Many of us worry about our carbon footprint, but we still want to keep our homes warm and comfortable during the winter months for ourselves and our families. Space and water heating accounts for as much as 50% of energy use in the average British home, so making our central heating more energy efficient can significantly reduce our environmental impact. There are several ways you can reduce the amount of energy your heating uses without compromising on comfort with the added benefit that you’re likely to save money by reducing your bills.
Get your boiler serviced
Having your boiler serviced at least once a year will keep it working efficiently and effectively so it uses less fuel to do its job. An unserviced boiler can be prone to issues such as blockages and corrosion of parts which means it has to work harder and use more fuel to heat your home and water.
Flush out your pipes
Over time radiators can become clogged with rust, sludge and other corrosion so they will not heat up as effectively. Your heating will have to run for longer to get your home up to a comfortable temperature, wasting energy. The solution is to have your system powerflushed, which involves a mixture of water and chemicals being pumped around your system at high speed and low pressure to clear out blockages. This should make your heating much more efficient cutting your energy use and saving you money.
Increase your control
Modern heating controls allow you to manage your heating far more effectively than old-fashioned models. Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) let you set your radiators in different rooms to different levels so you can compensate for rooms that are naturally hotter and colder without having to adjust your entire heating. This cuts your energy use because you don’t have to set your whole system to the level needed in the coldest part of your house.
Upgrade your boiler
Any boilers installed before 2005 are likely to be old-fashioned non-condensing models which are often as little as 60% efficient at turning their fuel into usable heat. A modern A-rated condensing boiler will be at least 90% efficient meaning it will use far less fuel to do the same job and hugely reduce the amount of CO2 you produce. The reduction in your bills is likely to soon outweigh the cost of the boiler making this a highly cost-effective move.
