One of the biggest problems boilers can suffer with comes from the very substance they need to function – water. Water that enters homes and businesses for boilers is rarely pure and this means it carries traces of different minerals. These minerals can cause problems in the system with magnetite being one example. So what can be done to deal with the problem of magnetite?
What is magnetite?
Magnetite is a mineral oxide of iron and this means that it is attracted to magnets and can become magnetic. In fact, it is the most magnetic of all naturally occurring minerals on the planet and when it is magnetised, it is known as lodestone as it attracts small pieces of iron – this is how people first discovered the idea of magnetism. Magnetite appears in almost all of the igneous and metamorphic rocks and is black or brown black in colour with a metallic sheen to it.
Magnetite and boiler corrosion
One of the big problems for any boiler can be corrosion and the presence of metals can make things worse. Left untreated, corrosion can impair efficiency and even lead to a full scale breakdown. Therefore, using the right treatments within the boiler system is an important part of ensuring that the boiler works in top condition.
The most common type of corrosion is called galvanic corrosion – this is where a metal is coupled to a different metal or alloy and the most common version is when iron and copper pair together. Part of the treatment for this includes using a magnetite layer inside tubes associated with the boiler that helps to reduce the presence of metals due to its magnetic properties.
MagnaClean
MagnaClean is a simple and efficient system to help deal with the problem of magnetite and other mineral elements in your boiler. It offers a simple installation process as well as ease of servicing by an expert that means you can have long term benefits with very little additional maintenance.
One of the impressive things about the system is that it offers near instant results and by protecting your system in this way, you can even save money. Heating bills can be cut by up to 6% a year just by installing the MagnaClean system. And because it is guaranteed for two years and has a long operational life, the savings offset the cost.
The system has been installed in over three million heating systems across Europe and also help reduce carbon emissions, allowing homes to move towards being carbon neutral.
