Would turning your boiler off, when you go on holidays, save you energy and money? If it’s turned off for a long period of time, will it still work when I’m back from holiday? These are all valid concerns, but they are also urban myths.
To turn off or leave on?
Boilers perform accordingly to their environment, therefore it might happen that an already faulty boiler that hasn’t been serviced in a few years isn’t able to properly function once it has been turned off for a few weeks. But leaving it on while you go on holiday, might just mean it will keep overspending.
It will also depend, on the type of boiler you have. More modern boilers are easier to manage and adjust accordingly, whilst some older boilers can be temperamental or have reliability issues.
For example, if your boiler is going to be turned off for long periods of time, it is helpful to turn it back on infrequently in order to prevent the valves seizing up. So, if you’re going away for your holidays, it may be a good idea to ask the neighbours, a friend or family member or switch on the timer to turn on the heating and hot water once or twice whilst your away. This way, you are balancing heat efficiency with reliability, and know you’re unlikely to face issues on your return.
Alternatively, set your thermostat to timer to ensure heating is switched on for a short time each week you are away, particularly in the winter months.
Regular boiler servicing
Secondly, it depends how well your boiler is looked after. It’s prudent to have your boiler regularly maintained and serviced annually. Not only do you have the peace of mind that your boiler is in good working order, but it also gives you the opportunity to be familiar with your boiler, especially if there are any possible issues likely in the future that may lead to needing boiler repairs.
Summer is a great time to look at having your boiler serviced, or even better, before you go on your summer holidays. This way, you are confident that your boiler is in full working order and not cause you any problems if left on while you are away. Additionally, a boiler company servicing your boiler at this time will help you ensure how to operate the boiler correctly, so you can brief your neighbor as to exactly the best way to turn it on, off and operate the hot water for you with confidence!
