With smart technology arriving in our homes, we now have a greater degree of control over our heating but even with traditional installations and older boilers there’s plenty of chance to set your heating as you like it. You can even also install individual thermostats on each radiator nowadays to give you more control in each room.
Ideally, you want to use the least amount of energy possible to get the heating effect you want, thereby saving on your utility bills. Often, it takes a bit of experimentation to find the right balance, particularly in older houses that are a little less well insulated.
How Long Does it Take to Warm a House?
The time is takes to heat your property will depend on the size of your home and where the cold spots are. Newer properties will tend to heat up quicker than older ones. There’s a general rule that it takes about an hour to 45 minutes to increase the temperature by a degree but this, again, depends entirely on the location and size. If you have a large, expansive hallway, for example, it’s going to take longer than a smaller bedroom.
What’s the Best Temperature for a Property?
This will also vary from person to person. Some might feel the cold more than others and need a higher temperature. It all comes down to what you are comfortable with.
If you have thermostats on your radiators, it can be a good idea to alter the temperature in different rooms. You may want it to be warmer, for example, in the living room and cooler in the bedroom where you want a comfortable night’s sleep. The average that most people tend to go for is between 18 and 21°C.
Turning your thermostat down by just one degree can give you significant savings over the year so it’s worth finding out what temperature you feel comfortable with.
Should You Turn Your Boiler Off During the Night?
If you have a comfortable bed and duvet, then it doesn’t make sense to keep the heating on overnight. Of course, there may be extreme cold snaps where you want to do this but for most British winters it’s not always necessary. Keeping the heating on all night can add a significant amount onto your next gas bill and unless you have a good reason we suggest that you turn it off.
