Having the right controls installed with your central heating system allows you to heat your home more efficiently, reduces the carbon footprint of your household and saves you money on your annual energy costs. So you make the right decisions when it comes to heating controls, we’ve looked at the core thermostats that every home should have and summarised how they help regulate temperature.
Boiler thermostat
The thermostat on your boiler allows you to set the temperature of the water within your central heating system. Increasing the temperature of the water will make your home heat faster, so you may want to turn this up during the colder winter months.
Cylinder thermostat
If your hot water is stored in a cylinder, then you’ll need a cylinder thermostat to prevent the water from overheating. A cylinder thermostat will turn the heat supply off when the stored water reaches a certain temperature.
Commonly, it is worth leaving this thermostat at a set temperature (hot enough to kill bacteria), as turning it up won’t heat the water faster, it will just make the water hotter.
Thermostatic Radiator Valves
Often referred to as TRVs, thermostatic radiator valves are attached to the radiators in your home and help control temperature by managing the flow of hot water.
Fitting a TRV to each radiator in your home (it is advisable to leave one radiator TRV free) allows you to control the heat of each individual room rather than the whole house. This means you can heat only the rooms you use, saving you money on your energy bills.
Room Thermostats
A room thermostat will allow you to have better control over the temperature of your home. They stop your house from getting warmer than it needs to be, keeping the heating on until it reaches the required temperature and turning it off until the temperature falls.
They need to be installed in a space where they can accurately gauge temperature, so can’t be blocked by any furniture, curtains, or be placed near radiators or other heat sources. Generally, room thermostats should be set between 18 and 21 degrees for a comfortable heat.
