The Gas Safe Register is the UKs official body for registered gas engineers. Anyone working on gas appliances such as boilers and gas cookers in the UK must by law be Gas Safe registered. This acts as proof that they have demonstrated the ability to work safely on gas appliances and should act as a guarantee that any work they do will be of an acceptable quality.
How the Gas Safe Register works
To become certified, an engineer must have completed the relevant training to ACS, NVQ or SVQ level. They then have to apply to the Gas Safe Register with proof of their qualifications and pay a fee. This ensures that only people with training from recognised institutions can becoming registered to work legally as a gas engineer in the UK, helping to guarantee a safe minimum standard of work.
Gas Safe registration is required for all work carried out on gas appliances, including fitting, repairs and servicing. When a Gas Safe registered engineer fits a new appliance, they can then notify the work and the property owner will receive a certificate. This is especially important for landlords who have a legal obligations to ensure the safety of gas appliances in their properties.
How do you know if an engineer is on the Gas Safe Register?
All registered engineers are required to carry their official Gas Safe Register ID card with them at all times. This will have their name and photo, so you can be sure the card belongs to the person carrying it. You should always ask to see this card before allowing someone to work on your gas appliances. Each engineer has their own unique ID card number which you can check on the Gas Safe Register website to make sure they are listed.
What happened to CORGI registration?
Formerly CORGI was the official gas registration body for the UK, however CORGI was replaced by the Gas Safe Register on 1 April 2009 for Great Britain and Isle of Mann (and in Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010). Any engineer trying to use CORGI credentials should be treated with suspicion and if they do not have a valid Gas Safe Register ID card you should use somebody else.
